Caring for Your Hearing Aids

Hearing aids help improve your hearing by increasing the volume of sound around you, making it easier for you to hear and communicate. They provide you with convenience, comfort, and ease. Therefore, you must take good care of them to preserve their quality performance. Aside from routine visits with our ENT doctor here at Arizona Ear, Nose & Throat Physicians in our Sun City and Sun City West, AZ, locations, to ensure that your hearing aids are in proper condition, here are some tips to help you maintain them at home:

  • Protect them from moisture: Moisture damages the sensitive technology present in your hearing aids. If they come into direct contact with water, dry them with a clean cloth immediately.
  • Change their batteries often: When batteries are left in your hearing aids for an extended time, it could corrode them. Keep the battery door open when not in use. In case you won’t be using them for a few days, remove the batteries. When replacing the batteries, use a cotton swab for cleaning the battery contacts.
  • Avoid getting them in contact with dirt: Your hands should always be clean before you touch your hearing aids. Dirt could block the microphone input easily if handled improperly.
  • Rid your devices of earwax: Ensure that your aids don’t have earwax in them, as it can affect their quality. After a day of using them, clean them softly with a cotton swab or toothbrush to remove unwanted debris and earwax.
  • Replace the wax filter often: Doing so will help avoid damage to the interior parts of your devices. Do this when you notice buildup on the filter.
  • Handle them with care: Make sure that they’re always held properly and stored in a safe and dry environment.
  • Set professional cleanings every four to six months: Professionals can spot and repair a couple of things you may have overlooked, as well as make necessary adjustments.

In case you encounter any recurring problems with the performance of your hearing aids, visit your ENT doctor in our Sun City or Sun City West, AZ, office, especially if cleaning them doesn’t fix the problem. It may have something to do with their delicate technology that is easily damaged if handled improperly. Do not attempt to tamper with it.
