Signs of Hearing Loss

If you seem to be losing your hearing, you are not alone. In fact, according to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, it is estimated that 30% of adults over the age of 65 are hearing impaired, 14% of adults between the ages of 45 and 64 have hearing loss, and nearly 8 million adults between the ages 18 and 44 are experiencing some degree of hearing loss.

What to Know About Hearing Loss

Hearing loss can sneak up on you. You may notice:

  • Hearing only muffled speech and sounds around you
  • Problems picking out individual words from background sounds
  • Needing people around you to speak more slowly, loudly, or clearly
  • Problems picking out consonants within words
  • Wanting to avoid conversations or social events because you can’t hear

If you believe you might experiencing hearing loss, don’t delay. Make an appointment with your ENT specialist. You don’t want to miss out on the sounds of your beautiful life. Your ENT specialist can perform a hearing screening to determine if you are losing your hearing, and to what degree.

A hearing screening is an easy test, requiring you to wear earphones and listen for various sounds and tones. You will raise your hand if you can hear the sounds and tones. A hearing screening determines whether you have unilateral hearing loss, or whether you are experiencing hearing loss in both ears.

If you have any signs of hearing impairment, you will be scheduled for a more extensive hearing test. You should schedule a hearing screening every 10 years, up until you reach the age of 50, and every 3 years after that.

If you are suffering from hearing loss, your ENT specialist may recommend several types of hearing aids to help you hear well again. Cochlear implants are another option for severe hearing loss. The implants compensate for parts of your ear that are not functioning properly.
